Algebra, Exploring an interesting world.

In the words of Billy Connolly, “I don’t know why I should have to learn Algebra…I’m never likely to go there.”

How do we lead students into the exciting world of Algebra without being overwhelmed with culture shock? Many students complain, “Where am I ever going to use this?” or having held horror travel stories, believe that is too hard, too foreign, and not a necessary learning experience.

This session will investigate ways of leading students gently into the world of pronumerals, coefficients, exponents, equations and expression through visualisation, exploration, and the need for generalisation.
