Fractionally More Interesting than Pizzas and Pies
Year 1-4 Fraction Instruction
Wednesday 1st July 3.45-4.45pm
Fractionally more interesting than pizzas and pies – Primary
Research has shown that children find fractions very hard to learn and proficiency with fractions is a predictor of success at senior high school levels. Students’ first introduction to this abstraction of mathematics is important in the development of their understanding and use of decimal fractions, common fractions, and percentages. It is also the foundations of proportional reasoning.
There are many important building blocks students need to conceptually understand before they can start manipulating fractions (adding and subtracting) in Year 5. If they are treating fractions as ‘units’ and not as two whole number with a line between them by the time they get to Year 5, they are more likely to experience success in higher levels of number and algebra.
