Saturday Morning Problem Solving

Held at the University of Adelaide's North Terrace campus, Saturday Maths Problem Solving is an opportunity for students in years 7 to 11 who are interested in developing their problem-solving skills in mathematics beyond the school curriculum. Students are supported by tutors, many of which have even attended Saturday session in the past or are Mathematics Teachers.

Below is some generic information for students who are new to Saturday Morning Problem Solving:

The sessions aim to assist students of like interests and abilities to:

• find friendship, inspiration and encouragement while working on, thinking about and solving  non-standard and sometimes complex problems.

• build up a tool chest of strategies which will enable them to solve problems they have never  seen before.

• become flexible and creative in their approach to solving problems.

We extend a special welcome to those new to the program. We hope you will find the experience challenging and rewarding. Below are a few notes that might help you.

Much of the time on Saturday will be spent working on and discussing competition type problems. You may be taught a few new skills and techniques for solving the problems.

There will be a set of question ranging in level of difficulty to cater for different stages of development in problem solving.  Some questions might need more background and this will be presented during the session. The aim is to build up your problem solving abilities so that you can progress to harder problems.

Motivation and perseverance are required to work on many of the problems. You may need assistance to work through some of the questions and gaining an understanding may need some reflection on your part. Be prepared to be frustrated at times!

Feel free to make mistakes. This means you are taking risks - an excellent route to success!

Seize the opportunity to work with others- and not just those from your own school. Brainstorming ideas together can enrich the process.  Please bring a A4 exercise book to keep a library of your efforts, as it can be useful to go back and reflect upon past progress.

Best Regards,

Michael Bammann
